Domestic Violence is any abusive behaviour used by one person (usually male) in a relationship to gain and maintain control over another’s life.

Some forms of violence are:

  • Physical Assault
    Punching, hitting, kicking, pushing, slapping, choking or the use of weapons.

  • Sexual Assault
    Being made to have sex or engage in sexual acts, indecent assault, being made to look at pornography.

  • Emotional Abuse
    Constant name-calling or put-downs. Behaviour that humiliates or undermines confidence.

  • Psychological Abuse
    A threat of violence or death, emotional or verbal abuse, which threatens, degrades or insults another.

  • Social Abuse

  • Being stopped from seeing friends and family. Being isolated socially or geographically.

  • Financial Abuse
    Withholding or taking money from a person in order to gain financial control over them.

  • Stalking and Harassment
    Following someone’s movements or activities either physically or by cyber stalking via social networking sites or checking phone messages or email. Constant unwanted contact.
